East Germany - List of Women Champions

First publications on women football matches in East Germany date back to 1959 and 1960, when teams from Dresden and Leipzig met in Dresden. The East German football federation (DFV) incorporated women's football in 1968. The first local league appears to have been founded in 1970 in Dresden, with 8 clubs; other districts, such as Karl-Marx-Stadt, Neubrandenburg and Rostock, followed soon, and by the end of 1971 about 150 women football teams existed.
Until the 1986/87 season, the champions were determined in a playoff tournament between four or five regional champions, who met over one or two days playing matches of 2x20 minutes. In 1987, a nationwide league with two sections (north and south) was formed, whose winners met in the championship final.
