Unofficial Series

Participants:
Olimpia (Asunción) [winners Copa Libertadores 1979]
América (Cd. de México) [winners CONCACAF Cup 1977]

After Olimpia had won the Copa Libertadores, they arranged to play América,
winners of the CONCACAF Champions Cup two years before; América considered
themselves the reigning champions of the confederation, although CONCACAF had
declared that the 1978 edition, which had not finished properly, was shared
between the three regional winners: Universidad Guadalajara for North America,
Comunicaciones for Central America, and Defence Force for the Caribbean.

Nevertheless, América and Olimpia played the first leg in Ciudad de México
before CONCACAF declared they did not endorse the series (as América were
not its current champions) one day before the return; thus, in the end the
matches were mere friendlies.
