Jalco Cup 1951-1959

This trophy was donated by Nigerian company Joe Allen & Co, hence the title; it was played for on eight occasions between Nigeria and Gold Coast (the current Ghana), the venue alternating between the two countries.

After the final edition in 1959, last winners Gold Coast kept the trophy. The tournament was then replaced by the Nkrumah Cup, featuring additional West African nations. Ghana vs Nigeria encounters were continued in the Azikiwe Cup from 1965 onwards.

Prior to the first edition of the Jalco Cup in 1951, a first (unofficial) match between Nigeria and Gold Coast was played in 1938 at King George V Stadium, Onikan grounds, with hosts Nigeria winning 3-1 ([Kea 12], which unfortunately does not specify the precise date of the match and curiously lists a final selection of 10 (ten) players for Nigeria).
