China was coached by the Yugoslav Bora Milutinovic who holds the world record
for coaching five different teams at five different World Cups: Mexico (1986),
Costa Rica (1990), USA (1994), Nigeria (1998), China (2002). He helped both
Costa Rica and China reach their first World Cups.
His older brother Milos Milutinovic was less successful as a coach (Bora was
less successful as a player), but was a great player for Partizan Belgrade and
Olympique Marseille; he was one of the best players for Yugoslavia at the 1954
and 1958 World Cups, reaching the quarterfinals.

receive their caps for this game.
Two of Hong Kong’s goals were scored by Zeljko Gavrilovic, a Yugoslav playing in
that territory. Yugoslavians were shut down by a fellow countryman. Most of Hong
Kong’s players were foreigners. They fielded a league all-star team.

Slovenia was shockingly leading 3-0 before the favoured Yugoslavs scored three
goals, tied the game and survived the shipwreck. And it all happened just 30 km
at Waterloo, where Napoleon’s military adventures came to an end. It is also
interesting that two Slovenian players, Milanic and Novak, used to play for
Yugoslavia prior to 1992. Slovenian coach Srecko Katanec excelled as a player
for old Yugoslavia at the 1990 World Cup, where the team took 5th place.

Although the victory was minimal, Yugoslavia finally showed its true class by
controlling the game. One controversy was a questionable ejection of Mateja
Kezman. A little known British boy band named itself “Kezman” “after a Yugoslav
football player that was sent off right after he got into the game”. Or something
like that.

Frustration took its toll on the Yugoslavs. With many of its players in their
early thirties, it marked the end of a talented generation. Due to political
circumstances, it took a long time for this crop of players to play in the final
rounds of the European championship. Red Star Belgrade was the club champion of
Europe and the world in 1991 and the national team qualified for the 1992 European
championship in Sweden. Four days before the championship, Yugoslavia was banned
from the tournament due to UN sanctions. It was replaced by Denmark who went
on to win the championship! A great generation missed a great opportunity. Due
to sanctions, Yugoslavia also missed the World Cup 1994 and Euro 1996. They
finally appeared at the 1998 World Cup, but most of those players were already
in their late 20’s and early 30’s. They were lucky to reach the second round
since they were no longer in form. Yugoslavia finally got to Euro 2000. A 6-1
trash by Holland in the quarterfinals ended the journey of a lost generation
that never lived up to its full potential. We can be satisfied with the fact
that we reached the quarterfinals.
Vujadin Boskov was the tournament’s oldest coach at the age of 70. He was the
leading Yugoslav defensive player at the 1954 and 1958 World Cups, reaching the
quarterfinals. He was also among the first Yugoslav post-World War II players
to play abroad, in Italy, where he was later successful as a coach. This was
not his first spell as a national team coach. He also coached his country at
the 1970-72 European campaign, where the old Yugoslavia eliminated the great
Dutch team in the qualifying round before bowing out to USSR in the quarterfinals
(0-0, 0-3).
Dragan Stojkovic “Piksi” was the only player remaining from the Euro’84 team.
Lothar Matthaus (Germany), Georghe Hagi (Romania), Michael Laudrup (Denmark)
also played at that championship.
Savo Milosevic and the Dutchman Patrick Kluivert both scored the largest number
of goals in the tournament (5 each), but Milosevic was awarded the goalscoring
prize (the Golden Boot) because he had one game less.
Ilija Petkovic took over as the national team coach after this championship.
He was coached by Boskov when he played at Euro’72 campaign and was one of
leading players for Yugoslavia at the 1974 World Cup where we made it to the
quarterfinals.

Yugoslavia won the Millenium Cup tournament in India. However, these matches were
not considered official internationals since the Yugoslavs a sort of fielded a
Yugoslav League All-Star team rather than an “A” team. But players were awarded
caps for these games.
The coach Ilija Petkovic decided to quit his job because he claimed that there
was a lot of corruption in the Yugoslav Football Federation. Milovan Djoric
(formerly under-21 coach) took over for the following World Cup qualifying games.
As a player, Djoric was a regular with Red Star Belgrade and made 1 appearance
for the national team.

After two ties and a loss to teams that were weaker than us, coach Milovan Djoric
was urged by the fans to resign. He responded by saying that he will quit if
Yugoslavia doesn’t qualify for the 2002 World Cup. He also said “I will leave when
I will want to, I have not finished my job yet.” This made him the butt of jokes.
Djoric was forced to resign anyway. A three-man coaching commission was appointed
to lead the national team for the rest of the qualifiers: Vujadin Boskov, Ivan
Curkovic, and Dejan Savicevic. Savicevic quit the international scene after being
injured prior to Euro 2000. This is Boskov’s third time as a national team coach.
Ivan Curkovic had been a famous goalkeeper for Partizan Belgrade and later St.
Etienne (France) in the 1960’s and 1970’s, reaching the European Champions’ Cup
finals with both. He made a number of appearances for the national team as well.

Yugoslavia won the third and last place at Kirin Cup. Japan won. This game was
the last international match for Dragan Stojkovic “Piksi”. He collected 84 caps,
just one less than Dragan Dzajic. Had there not been UN sports sanctions, he would
have been a record holder for Yugoslavia in number of international matches played.
He spent the last seven years of his career playing for Nagoya Grampus Eight in
Japan. His previous clubs include Radnicki Nish and Red Star Belgrade (Yugoslavia),
Olympique Marseille (France), Verona (Italy). He reached the European Champions
Cup final with Olympique 1991 (lost in the final against his former team mates
at Red Star!) and won the competition in 1993. Stojkovic’s international debut
came at 18, in 1983 against France (0-0) and played at the 1990 and 1998 World
Cups as well as the 1984 and 2000 European Championships. He won the bronze medal
at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.

shared the bronze medal with France. Stojkovic was also on the team that
won the silver at 2004 European U-21 championship.

Note: Lecce striker Mirko Vucinic was originally selected for the 23-man squad
but had to pull out due to a knee injury he had suffered during the European
U-21 championship. The coach Ilija Petkovic called his 32-year-old son Dusan
Petkovic as Vucinic's replacement.

This led to a lot of criticism from the fans, the media, and even from officials
in the country's football federation. They claimed that Ilija should have
called someone younger and more energetic. Many even assumed that Ilija called
Dusan only because he is his son, although both insisted that was not the case.

After a lot of pressure, Dusan Petkovic decided to leave the team and return to
Serbia. As a result, the Serbia-Montenegro football team travelled to the World
Cup with only 22 players.

suffered by Yugoslavia/Serbia-Montenegro at the World Cups.

Serbia-Montenegro was leading 2-0 before losing 3-2. Two goals were conceded
from penalties caused by Milan Dudic’s handballs.
Ilija Petkovic stepped down as Serbia-Montenegro coach.

The team lost all three games and went home. This was our worst World Cup ever.

This was the last time the Serbia and Montenegro competed jointly because just
prior to the World Cup they became two independent countries. Serbia inherited
Yugoslavia/Serbia-Montenegro’s place in FIFA and UEFA and began competing on
its own at Euro 2008 qualifiers.

The national team of the newly independent Serbia debuted with a victory in a
friendly against the Czech Republic. The team played under a new name (finally),
new flag, new national anthem that was the anthem of the royalist Yugoslavia
(1918-1941) and the pre-1918 independent Serbia. Even the new jerseys were used.
It was also the first time that a foreigner became the national team’s coach.
The Basque Xavier Clemente coached Spain from 1992-1998. On the Czech side,
Pavel Nedved played his farewell match for the national team.
