Lebanon 2000/01

Season annulled.

NB: all matches of all 7 teams involved in the match fixing scandal were
annulled, giving Lebanon the third champion for the season: after Tadamon
(mathematical champions after round 21) and Nijmeh (champions after all
fixed matches were awarded against the perpetrators), Ansar turned out to
have won the head-to-head table among the 5 teams not involved. Finally,
in October, it was decided to cancel the whole 2000/01 first division
championship: no champions, no relegation, and two teams promoted.

Meanwhile, on June 28, nine leading figures at the FA resigned, while sports
minister Sebouh Hovnanian dissolved the FA's executive committee (in spite of
having no legal right to do so).

After investigation of the results between March 14 and April 15, the Lebanese
FA found that 7 clubs were guilty of match fixing: Al-Tadamon Tyre, Akha-Ahly,
Shabab Al-Sahel, Safa, Homenmen, Al-Salam Zghorta and Al-Ahly Sidon.

15 players were suspended for life:
Kamokai Kallon, Youssouf Hijazi, Nabil Baalbaki and Youssouf Baalbaki (all Tadamon)
Ahmed Al-Saqr (Homenmen)
Youssouf Mohamed, Shadi Al-Shami and Daniel Al-A'awar (all Safa)
Habib Qdeih (Ahly Sidon)
3 players from Shabab Al-Sahel
3 players from Al-Salam Zghorta

7 officials were banned for life:
Ali Ahmed (president), Sahrif Wehbe (vice-president) and Nader Bassma (all Tadamon)
Missak Najarian (general secretary Homenmen)
Tsurik Barsekhian (manager Al-Salam Zghorta)
2 officials from Akha-Ahly

Al-Nijmeh were crowned champions, relegation was suspended for this season;
next year, the league will play with 14 teams, of which 4 will go down to
return to a 12-team format for 2002/03.

NB: officially (according the regulations of the FA) all 7 teams found guilty of
match fixing should have been relegated to the 2nd level.

On June 22, the Lebanese FA decided that in accordance to the regulations,
Al-Tadamon Tyre, Akha-Ahly, Shabab Al-Sahel, Safa, Homenmen, Al-Salam Zghorta
and Al-Ahly Sidon are all relegated.

In addition to Al-Bourj and Al-Ahed, also Shabab Al-Khiam and Al-Mabarra are
promoted (finished 3rd and 4th in 2nd division), while the remaining 3 places
in the 1st division will be defined in an additional playoff between 4 teams
from the 2nd division.

In October, it was decided to cancel the whole 2000/01 first division
championship: no champions, no relegation, and two teams (Bourj and Ahed)
promoted.
