Lion City Cup (Singapore)

The Lion City Cup is an invitational youth competition held in Singapore, traditionally for under-16 teams although the age-group has varied over the years.

The competition began in 1977 with Singapore competing against Malaysian state representative teams. The second edition was similar, with the addition of Indonesia and Brunei, then from 1979 to 1982 the competition was upgraded into an international event for Asian countries (and Australia). In this period the momentum of the event attracted the interest of FIFA, paving the way for the first FIFA U16 World Cup in 1985. As a consequence, it became impracticable to hold the Lion City Cup with the same international calibre of invitees, and the competition was not held again until 1990 when it was revived in its original form.

In the early 1990s the guests comprised Malaysian states, South East Asian countries, and Australian teams. AIK Stockholm and India were invited in the late 1990s, and during the 2000s the event changed frequently in both format and composition, sometimes with two separate age-group tournaments being held in parallel. After a hiatus, from 2011 the focus of the event switched to pitting Singapore against the youth teams of major European and South American clubs, rather than regional Asian opponents.
