On 7th July 1978, Solomon Islands attained its independence and held a variety of sporting events in Honiara as part of the celebrations. The football results were as follows: Men's football (at Lawson Tama Stadium) 5- 7-78 Sunrise Club 1-3 Papua New Guinea 7- 7-78 Solomon Islands 0-2 Papua New Guinea [HT 0-1] 8- 7-78 Rangers FC 3-0 Papua New Guinea Women's football (at King George VI High School) 6- 7-78 1st Honiara Select 0-0 2nd Honiara Select One year later, two full internationals were played around the first independence anniversary: 5- 7-79 Solomon Islands 3-1 New Hebrides [HT 0-0] (at Lawson Tama Stadium) 6- 7-79 Solomon Islands 3-0 New Hebrides (at Lawson Tama Stadium)
