Cup Final 1955:
06/06/1955 in Madrid, Estadio Santiago Bernabeu: Athletic de Bilbao - Sevilla FC 1-0
Referee: Arqué
Classification for European Cups:
Champions' Cup: Real Madrid
Cup Winners' Cup: not yet contested
Fairs Cup: FC Barcelona (from 1955 until 1958)
Note: the idea of a European competition for clubs was launched by the French
magazine L'Equipe. Gabriel Hanot, journalist at L'Equipe, drew up a
list of 16 clubs in Febuary 1955 which he thought most suitable to play
for the trophy. The UEFA, at its congress in Vienna on March 1st, at
first declined responsability for the organization of the tournament,
and L'Equipe invited the 16 clubs for a meeting in Paris, April 2 and
3, 1955, at which regulations for the tournament were agreed upon.
An executive committee was formed, of which Santiago Bernabeu was the
vice-president. The committee informed FIFA on the basis on which the
tournament was to be held, and on the instigation of FIFA, the UEFA
after all agreed to take over responsibility for the tournament, under
the name of "Cup of the European Champions Clubs".
Note that Real Madrid did not qualify for the tournament as champions
of Spain 1954/55, but by invitation - in fact several other participants
were not champions of their country but nevertheless invited by L'Equipe
to participate.
