The Chinese were strenghtened when the Kong Shenghui and Lin Lang/Lin Lam players united to reform the South China Athletic Association (Nan Hua), and the club grew to become an icon of Asian football. They dominated the rudimentary Japanese students team which wore the brown shirts of the Tokyo Higher Normal School with the Rising Sun Flag as a badge to indicate that they were representing Japan. China played in black and white striped shirts and black shorts. Tong Fuk Cheong took a corner and Fung Kin On scored after 3 minutes, then the same player got another some 20 minutes later. When Tong Yuk Hong scored from 30 yards on the half-hour the Japanese visibly wilted; Fung Kin On completed his hattrick to add the fifth Chinese goal.

The temperature in Tokyo was low this year and the Filipino players suffered from the cold, but the difference in ability was still clear. Philippines included the legendary Paulino Alcantara, who was born in 1896 in Iloilo City, central Philippines, to a Spanish soldier and a Filipino mother, and moved to Barcelona as a boy. He made his debut in Barcelona's top team at the age of 15 scoring a hat-trick.
After that, Alcantara returned to the Philippines to go on to college. He remained in Manila, playing for Bohemian, for two years before rejoining Barca. One of Barcelona's all-time greats, he was a record goalscorer known as the 'netbuster'.
In those days matches lasted an hour (2x30 mins) so the goals came virtually every four minutes; the Japanese reporter was obviously peeved and stopped recording the goalscorers after the fifth.
11- 5-1917 China 3-0 Philippines

The Philippines started brightly but the Chinese defence held out and Yip Kwan opened the scoring on a quick counter-attack. This stormy match was abandoned after Tong Fuk Cheong converted a penalty, following a foul on Kwok Po Kan making the score 3-0, after which the Philippines goalkeeper punched the Chinese scorer and fighting ensued, leading to the withdrawal of the Philippines. They left the field, but were persuaded to return and finish the match as the crowd were becoming increasingly agitated.
