II Campeonato Mundial de Fútbol Femenil (Women) 1971

This was the second edition of a world championship played for the Trofeo Martini & Rossi (also referred to as the "Copa Angel de Oro"). The final tournament was held in Mexico. Matches were played over 2x35 minutes. The competition was organized by the FIEFF (Federazione Internazionale Europea di Football Femminile), from March 1971 restyled as the FIFF (Federazione Internazionale di Football Femminile), which was not affiliated to FIFA.

The FIEFF Congress at Torino (5 to 7-12-70) appointed Mexico as host of a final tournament which would involve five other teams, four from Europe and one from Latin America. These five would be determined via a qualifying round, proposed to be held from 1-3-71 to 15-5-71, with a deadline of 15-1-71 for entries. On 1-3-71 it was reported that 11 European teams had entered: Austria, Belgium, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, England, France, Italy, Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, and West Germany. At this point there was no confirmed non-European entrant, other than host Mexico. The organizers expressed the hope that Brazil might participate, but it was not a member of the federation.

The draw for the qualifying round was published on 31-3-71, by which time Spain had been added to the list of European participants, making 12 teams which were divided into four groups of three; in the end only six of these teams actually took part. The fifth group consisted of Argentina alone, and it was stated that Argentina would qualify by default if no other Latin American team registered later. Brazil and Peru had been mentioned as potential participants previously, but they did not feature in the draw. At no point was any team from Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, or Oceania mentioned.

By mid June 1971 the Latin American qualifier was still unconfirmed, and reports suggested that Argentina could yet face Chile and/or Costa Rica. However, in the end Argentina qualified by default without playing. In particular, the organizers had rejected Chile's entry because it "did not meet the requirements of the federation."

On 23-6-71 it was reported that the six finalists were confirmed as Argentina, Denmark, England, France, Italy, and Mexico.

Note: originally only one team was to qualify from each group, but Group 4
did not produce any qualifier and the spare place went to England.

Group 2

Czechoslovakia withdrew

17- 4-71 France 4-0 Netherlands
           [Ratignier 7' 16' 51', Harant 60']

Koos Minderhoud, Marja Versprille, Dina Vogelaar, José van Hoof.
                Coach: Robert Verbruggen.
Notes: reportedly, the French players were not informed that this was a
qualification match until after the final whistle. The Dutch association
(Algemene Nederlandse Damesvoetbalbond) was under the impression that
this match was a friendly vs Stade de Reims, and that the qualification
match(es) would take place in May; it was later surprised to receive a
letter stating that the Dutch team had been eliminated. A letter of
protest was sent but no reply was received.]

Qualified: France

Group 3

Belgium and Sweden withdrew

Qualified: Denmark (by default)

Note: a match Denmark 5-0 Sweden is sometimes listed as a qualifier, but this
is incorrect, as that match took place in October 1971. Similarly another
      match Denmark 4-3 Sweden was played on 26-6-71 but that was also a friendly;
Denmark's qualification had already been confirmed by the organizers several
      days earlier.

Group 4

Spain, Switzerland, and West Germany all withdrew

Group 5

Qualified: Argentina (by default)

Group 6

Qualified: Mexico (automatically as host)
