Notes: Although this match is not always recognised as a full international, there is
no doubt by the Scottish and Belgian FAs that it had full status. The match was
described by debutant Archibald Baird in his autobiography, Family of Four, as
follows: "It was a game that should never have been played. Snow covered the
ground to a depth of several inches and the top surface was a sheet of ice,
making it more like a skating-rink than a football pitch. The fact that the
Belgians had travelled so far - and a foreign team was a rarity in Scotland -
must have influenced the decision to go ahead with the game. An international
match would never be played today in those conditions. To add to the chaos
caused by snow and ice, the ground was enveloped in a thick fog. Far from
being able to see both goals from the centre-circle as the rule-book insisted,
we could scarcely make out players a couple of yards away. For the spectators
the whole thing was farcical; few, if any at all, saw the four goals scored
that day, two of them by Jimmy Delaney to give Scotland a draw. Certainly,
the goalkeepers never saw them, and how on earth our selectors saw anything
at all to help them pick their next international team, I have never understood."
This was the first international match staged at Hampden Park after a fire
on 26th December 1945 that badly damaged the centre stand.

Notes: Scotland were runners-up. England won the home title. Before the qualification competition for the 1950 World Cup Finals in Brazil, George Graham, secretary of the Scottish FA, said that Scotland would only travel to Brazil as winners of the home title. England, by contrast, had committed to attending, even if they finished in second place. After Scotland ended up in second place behind England, the Scottish captain George Young, encouraged by England captain William Wright, pleaded with the Scottish FA to change its mind and accept the place in Brazil. Graham ensured that the SFA committee maintained its position and so Scotland did not take part in the final tournament.
