The Northern Welsh Football Association was formed in October 1879 at the initiative of Bangor, who had left the FAW out of disagreement with the handling of their third round tie against White Stars from Newtown in the previous season. The NWFA was open to clubs from the four counties of Carnarvon, Denbigh, Anglesea and Flint. The official name of this cup competition was "Northern Welsh Football Association Challenge Cup".
